Receiving Compliments

I love receiving compliments! A compliment brings joy every single time. Ninety percent of the time that I receive a compliment someone comments that they like my hair. I don’t think my hair is anything special, really, especially because I just pull it up into a ponytail most days. But, there’s lots of it and you can’t really miss it. I guess people don’t know what else to say when they see my mop of crazy thick lion curls. So I hear “Oh wow, you have great hair” instead of “Holy cow, what’s up with your hair.”

My sister has hair just like mine and she had someone tell her once that she was really good at growing hair. She didn’t know how to answer that one! What do you say to that? Well, thank you? I try really hard to grow good hair! Ha Ha! You have to admit that this is pretty funny! Anyway, because of this, I feel like my hair is my best feature as it is always the topic of conversation with people I don’t know.

Bringing Joy with a Compliment

But what I love more than getting a compliment is giving one. I love to compliment people, even ones I don’t know, on something I like about them. Usually it’s about their looks or clothes as these topics are the easiest to see on people I don’t know. The other day I was shopping with my family and saw a gorgeous lady wearing a super cute spring dress. I stopped and just complimented her on how pretty she looked in her dress but then made my shy self go back and ask where she bought it. This sounds funny and a little forward, I know, especially as I don’t really like to talk to people. But for some reason if I’m giving a compliment to someone, I don’t really have to talk to them, just compliment and walk away. This lady was so sweet and in return she helped out and told me several places that sold her specific cute dress and other styles like it. Not only did we then go buy a similar dress that day for my daughter, but I felt super happy and hope she did, too!

It’s Easy to Compliment

I love to catch someone and surprise them with a quick thank you for being so kind, or comment on their beautiful smile or express admiration for their talents, bravery and good attitude. Noticing what they are good at and then throwing them a simple yet very serious compliment is easy. Not sure what to say? Check out this awesome blog full of ideas. 100 Compliments. I know these comments are not life changing for others but they are for me. This habit of complimenting others has changed me from being so shy and uncomfortably quiet and helped me blossom into someone I want to be. I like to make others happy. And I find that every person has some good qualities that I can compliment.

I’m not always the most outgoing, usually I’m the opposite. But when it comes to giving a compliment, I’ll go out of my way to make someone’s day. I love watching the reaction and the smile that crosses their face when they hear what I have to say about them. It makes my day better every single time. And for most of my friends, I feel like it was how we became friends from the beginning, with a simple compliment.
