I have this really cool sister. She is a middle school science teacher and is everyone’s favorite aunt because of all the fun stuff she knows and does. She planned a family reunion solely based on the solar eclipse that will be happening next week. Truly. It’s been on the calendar since 2013 when she sent a Facebook invite to us. We are pulling our kids out of school and heading to Eastern Idaho for the blessed event… along with 500,000 other people. Haha! Seriously, though- we’re really excited.
This eclipse is pretty special, mostly because totality (when the stars pop out and it gets 20 degrees cooler) will start in Oregon and stretch all the way across the country, ending in South Carolina. The last eclipse to hit the United States was back in 1979 and it only passed through a few states. This one is a big deal! So many people will get to experience it without going anywhere and that makes this an experience to talk about.
If you want to read up a little on what to expect, I’d recommend heading to Astronomy.com to read their 25 Facts About the 2017 Solar Eclipse. It’s a quick and informative read that will hopefully get you excited for what is ahead. Also, check out NASA’s website for how to view the eclipse safely if you aren’t going to be in a place to see it in its totality or to watch the before and after totality. Watch your kiddos! Take the time to explain to them that looking at a partial solar eclipse without proper protection over their eyes can do serious damage to their vision.
I’m planning on posting live during the eclipse so those who can’t be there will be able to experience some of the fun… if the cell towers aren’t on overload and my phone is working (a hazard that many experts are predicting will be a problem.) For those who are traveling like me: good luck! Pack a gas can in your car for emergencies, grab that paper map in case your GPS is useless, and carry cash! Can’t wait to check in during and after the event!
