Are you trying to get your teenage boys reading? I hope this post will help as I have two teenage boys who could spend just about every waking minute reading if I would allow it. Because I am also a reader, I encourage lots and lots of reading time. I wish someone encouraged as much reading time from me and not as much housework, haha! Besides being outside, there isn’t much I approve of more than good old-fashioned reading.
If you say there isn’t enough time for your kids to read, think again! I find my boys reading in a hammock, on long car rides, during down time in class, on the school bus ride home, during sporting events, and every evening after their homework is complete when they are supposed to be sleeping. When my boys are with their friends and they start discussing books, I just smile inside. I also enjoy when they ask for books as gifts for Christmas or birthdays. They have started a pretty great collection of their own.
But, I believe, the trick to getting kids to read is what books they have available to read. If they don’t have great books as an option, reading will be a chore instead of a fun past-time. They also need to know how to access books.
One of my boys loves reading enough that for his Eagle Scout project he build Little Free Libraries and installed them at parks so others could also have access to books. He was pretty excited about sharing his love of reading with others. I’ll post soon about the amazing Little Free Library system. This is a great option for finding books for free.
Knowing the school librarians is also very valuable. Luckily, our school librarians know my boys personally and save books for them when they get checked in or are newly released! I have to say we’ve had some amazing librarians that have influenced my boys and led them to some really great book series. Thanks!
Though I do allow my boys to read books on the kindle, I still prefer for them (and they prefer as well) to read from a real, made from paper, book. It’s just so fulfilling to hold a book in your hands and go on an adventure together. So what are they reading? I’d say just about anything they can get their hands on. Here is a list of their favorites books and series for the age range of 9-16! I hope this list will be useful for you to help lead your teenage boys to great books. If you have any suggestions for us, please let me know! Click on the book title to take you to Amazon. The book age ranges come from commonsensemedia.org and goodreads.com which also have great reviews to help you determine what book is appropriate for what age. Now go get your teenage boys reading!
