Did you know that homemade donuts are one of the easiest and fastest things you could ever make in your kitchen? It’s totally true. There are only two ingredients, aside from any toppings you might want. It will take you about 30 seconds to prep the dough, two minutes to heat the oil and 45 seconds to cook them into beautiful donuts.
- 1 can of premade biscuit dough
- 16 ounces of vegetable or canola oil
- Any toppings you wish ( I love plain old granulated sugar)
- Pour oil into a deep frying pan and turn to medium heat.
- Open can of biscuits and cut a hole in the center of each.
- Test oil to ensure it is hot enough by dropping one of the biscuit holes into the oil. If it bubbles around the donut hole, it is ready.
- Add donuts and remaining holes to the oil in a single layer with enough room to turn. Do two batches, if necessary.
- Watch carefully as the bottoms of the dough turn golden brown, about 25 seconds.
- Flip to cook the other side, about 25 seconds.
- Remove with tongs or a slotted spoon onto a plate lined with paper towels to soak up grease.
- Cover hot donuts with sugar or your topping of choice.
- Don't forget to cook the donut holes! They may need to be rolled around to ensure browning on all sides.
- My kids love a powdered sugar glaze on their donuts: one cup of powdered sugar and 2 TBS. of water. Stir well. Then, dip donuts into glaze. Add sprinkles, if desired.
Everytime I make these donuts I am reminded of my sweet friend, Melissa, who lived down the street from me several years ago. She would sit in her driveway each Halloween and make donuts for everyone who came around. I know her tradition still lives in her new neighborhood and every year I am sad I am not there to enjoy them. It wasn’t just her donuts, but her infectious smile and her true joy at being able to do something wonderful for her neighbors and friends that made them special.
So, go run to the store and grab some biscuit dough. Cook these babies up in just a few minutes. Play around with your toppings and create something wonderful. Maybe it will become your new tradition, too! 🙂
